Studio Museum in Harlem finishes demolition to make way for 68K sf project

The Studio Museum in Harlem, on August 17, completed the demolition of a building at 144 West 125th Street in Central Harlem.

The plans, pre-filed on September 5, 2018, call for the demolition of a building.

The project is described in the filings as: demolition of entire structure.

The demolition makes way for the museum’s new development, which they filed plans for on December 27, 2017. The plans call for a six-story, 159-foot tall, 68,296-square-foot building.

The demolished building had stood for a century, and was adapted for museum use in the 1980s. Reports indicated that construction will take place with the help of a $175 million capital campaign, and will be developed in partnership with the city.

The Studio Museum in Harlem is a hub for artists of African descent locally, nationally, and internationally and for work that has been inspired and influenced by Black culture.
