NYC finishes $19.7M rehab of The Sun Building

NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services, on September 3, formally completed a $19.7 million rehabilitation of The Sun Building at 280 Broadway in City Hall.

The plans, pre-filed on December 24, 2015, call for a rehab of the roof and all floors of the 180-foot tall, seven-story, designated New York City Landmarked building.

The project is described in the filings as: facade and roof restoration as indicated on the plans filed herewith. No change in use, egress or occupancy. The initial cost as reported in the DOB filing for the work described in this permit application is $19,685,575.

The historic building was completed in 1846, originally standing five-stories tall. It was formally known as the A.T. Stewart Store and is considered one of the most influential buildings in the city.

The building gets its name from the New York Sun Newspaper, who purchased the building in 1917 and owned it until the city took control if it in 1966. The building underwent a significant renovation which was completed in the early 2000s. Today the upper floors are occupied by the Department of Buildings.
