Nonprofit art institution files plans for $14.3M expansion of a building in Chelsea
The Kitchen, on January 21, filed plans for a $14.3 million vertical expansion of its art institution at 512 West 19th Street in Chelsea, Manhattan. The project will add assembly spaces to the building.
The Kitchen, one of New York City’s oldest nonprofit spaces, was founded as an artist collective in 1971 by Woody and Steina Vasulka and incorporated as a nonprofit two years later, according to their website.
The plans call for the increase in size of the building from a 72-foot tall, three-story building to a 71-foot tall, four-story building. This was filed with the New York City Department of Buildings under job number M00644419.
The project is described in the filing as: Herewith filing for interior renovation of existing building and updating the certificate of occupancy with public assembly spaces and uses.
The architect listed is Rice+Lipka Architects.
