Hospital permitted for $81.3M project to add six stories, 86K sf to Lenox Hill hospital

Hospital for Special Surgery, on October 7, received a permit for an $81.3 million vertical expansion of a medical building at 537 East 71st Street in Lenox Hill. Lisa Goldstein filed the plans.

The plans are the third most expensive alteration plans filed in the neighborhood since the start of 2019. The plans are one of two alteration plans filed at the building since the start of 2019, the other plans called for a $1.9 million project.

The plans, pre-filed on June 22, 2019, call for the increase in the size of the building from a 93-foot tall, eight-story, 339,714-square-foot building to a 184-foot tall, 14-story, 425,947-square-foot building.

The project is described in the filing as: enlarge the existing hospital building with a horizontal enlargement above the FDR drive. The new enlargement consists of floors three through 14. All uses are accessory to the hospital as per plans filed herewith. Also construct part of a bridge over east 71st street to connect the enlargement to the existing HSS hospital building on the fourth floor. The initial cost as reported in the DOB filing for the work described in this permit application is $81,300,000.

Per the plans, the newly constructed floors will have patient exam and treatment rooms and office space.
