City files plans to demolish several buildings along Gowanus Canal

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection, on November 22, filed four permit applications for the demolition of four structures at 226, 228, 242, and 254 Nevins Street in Gowanus, Brooklyn. These city-owned buildings are on the north end of the Gowanus Canal.

The plans are related to the Gowanus Canal Combined Sewer Overflow Facilities Project, which aims to support the remediation of the Gowanus Canal.

The city filed to demolish the four structures within the city block outlined in red.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ordered the city to construct and operate two Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) retention tanks to control contaminated solids discharges at the Gowanus Canal Superfund site.

The first plans call for the demolition of a two-story building at 226 Nevins Street.

The project is described in the filings as: full demolition of two-story structure, using hand held and mechanical means to assist.

The property is also known as 234 Butler Street.
