City files plans for 430K sf of film studios at Pier 6 in Sunset Park

The New York City Economic Development Corporation, on December 1, filed three permit applications for the construction of a 217,758-square-foot film studio building at 60 Harborside Road, a 213,348-square-foot film studio at 80 Harborside Road, and a 189,880-square-foot parking garage at 50 Harborside Road in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The filings are part of a plan to revitalize the deteriorated Pier 6 in the neighborhood. Karina Gilbert, senior vice president of design and construction with the city’s EDC, filed the plans.

News of the proposed development began to circulate earlier this year after the EDC announced the plans on a Zoom meeting of Community Board 7.

The film and TV studio will both be part of the Bush Terminal’s Made in NY Campus, which is a $136 million initiative by the city to create a center for fashion, film, and television. The project is expected to support 2,200 full-time jobs upon completion.

This is not the only large new development project spearheaded by the city. EDC recently filed a permit application for construction of a 1,041-unit, 589,842-square-foot mixed-use building at 495 11th Avenue, between 39th and 40th streets, in Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan. The building will have 683 hotel rooms and 358 apartments.

The first of the Sunset Parks plans call for the construction of a 150-foot-tall, eight-story building and were filed with the New York City Department of Buildings under job number B00598666.

The project is described in the filing as: herewith filing new eight-story building : tv filming studios, wardrobe storage and accessory spaces.

Per the plans, the building will have storage, a lobby, stages, workshops, greenrooms, dressing rooms, rehearsal rooms, and a series of offices.

The architect listed is Dattner Architects.

The second plans call for the construction of a 143-foot-tall, seven-story building and were filed with the New York City Department of Buildings under job number B00616429.

The project is described in the filing as: herewith filing new eight-story building: tv filming studios, wardrobe storage and accessory spaces.

Per the plans, the building will have storage, a lobby, stages, workshops, greenrooms, dressing rooms, rehearsal rooms, and a series of offices.

The architect listed is Dattner Architects.

The third plans call for the construction of a 71-foot-tall, seven-story garage and were filed with the New York City Department of Buildings under job number B00629141.

The project is described in the filing as: herewith filing for a new seven-story parking garage.

Per the plans, all seven stories of the building will be used for parking. In total, the structure will provide parking for 565 cars.

The architect listed is Desman Inc.
