City files plans for $17.7M roof rehab of prison building on Rikers Island

New York City Department of Correction, on December 9, filed a permit application for a $17.7 million rehabilitation of a building, known as the Otic Bantam Correctional Center, at 1600 Hazen Street in Rikers Island. The island is legally part of Queens.

The plans call for a rehab of the roof of the 53-foot tall, six-story building.

The project is described in the filings as: roof repair work at Otic Bantam Correctional Center (OBCC) in Rikers Island as per plans filed. Work to include removal and replacement of existing sheetmetal and membrane roofing with new insulated metal panel system, installation of new guard rails, installation of scupper drains, gutters and leaders. No change to use, egress or occupancy under this application. The initial cost as reported in the DOB filing for the work described in this permit application is $17,738,000.

The city recently completed a $7.2 million rehab of several floors of another prison building on the island, located at 11-11 Hazen Street.
