City files demo plans for eight-story detention center in Kew Gardens
New York City Department of Design and Construction, on May 3, filed a permit application for the demolition of a detention center building with the address 126-02 82nd Avenue, used for prisoners facing court hearings at Queens County Criminal Courthouse in Kew Gardens, Queens. This is part of the plan to close Rikers Island and house prisoners in smaller jails in the boroughs. A 1,150-bed jail is planned at the compound.
The plans call for the demolition of the eight-story building.
The project is described in the filings as: full demolition of eight-story NYC detention center, with hand held and mechanical means to demolish entire structure, from within the building.
