Religious group files $4.2M project to convert commercial to church, homeless shelter in Brownsville
Bethel Deliverance Gospel Center International, on July 28, filed a permit application for a $4.2 million project to convert a commercial building to a religious space and homeless shelter at 397 Rockaway Avenue in Brownsville.
The conversion will increase the size of the building from a 30-foot tall, four-story, 8,100-square-foot building to a 70-foot tall, seven-story, 24,000-square-foot building with four residential floors.
The project is described in the filings as: propose to vertically and horizontally enlarge existing building. Convert to place of worship and homeless shelter. The initial cost as reported in the DOB filing for the work described in this permit application is $4,200,000.
A community room and food preparation area will be added to the basement, according to the plans. The ground floor will go from a retail store to a place of worship, while the vacant second and third floors will be converted to each have recreational areas, dining areas, and public assembly space. The newly constructed floors four through seven will be used for the single sex homeless housing.
