Anbang Insurance Group files plans for $70M multi-floor rehab of Waldorf Astoria Hotel
Anbang Insurance Group, on June 24, filed plans for a $70 million rehab of several floors of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel at 301 Park Avenue in the Plaza District of Manhattan.
The plans call for work on floors five through 12 of the 570-foot tall, 44-story building, and were filed with the New York City Department of Buildings under number M00482474.
The plans were filed in conjunction with $150 million A1 plans filed in November of 2016. Those plans called for a “major renovation entailing removal and replacement of stairs, portion of hotel to be converted to residential, new ceilings, floors, and doors.” In total, the project aimed to increase the building’s unit count from 344 to 752.
The following month, the developer filed plans for an additional $20 million of work on the building. In 2019, plans were filed for a $25 million repair of the building’s facade.
The project is described in the filing as: hotel rooms renovation on floors five through 12. New walls, doors and flooring as per plans. Filed in conjunction with Alt 1 #121191245. No change to use, egress or occupancy.
Skidmore, Owings & Merrill is listed as the architect.
The Chinese insurance company purchased the building from Hilton for nearly $2 billion back in 2014. Hilton agreed to continue to manage the property under a “strategic partnership.”
The famous hotel closed in 2017 for a multiyear renovation. The New York Landmarks Preservation Commission voted to protect several of the hotel’s public spaces as being prominent and culturally significant. The building’s exterior has been landmarked since 1993.
