Doe Fund files plans for 32-unit homeless residence in Bed-Stuy

The nonprofit Doe Fund, on October 21, filed a permit application for construction of a 32-unit, 53,443-square-foot building at 510 Gates Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. John McDonald, executive vice president of the organization, filed the plans. The dwelling units will be used as sleeping accommodations for the homeless.

The plans are one of 33 new building plans filed in the neighborhood so far this year. The nonprofit recently filed plans for the construction of a 96-unit, 47,748-square-foot residential building at 1220 Spofford Avenue in Hunts Point, the Bronx. According to an analysis from PincusCo, the plans called for the construction of the most dwelling units in Hunts Point since the start of 2018.

The Doe Fund seeks to address homelessness, incarceration, and recidivism by providing holistic services, housing, and work opportunities.

The Bed-Stuy plans call for the construction of a 65-foot-tall, six-story building and were filed with the New York City Department of Buildings under job number B00596086.

The project is described in the filing as: propose new six-story plus cellar building as non-profit institution with sleeping accommodations (use group 3A) as per plan. Building as per plan. Obtain new certificate of occupancy.

Per the plans, the ground floor of the building will have offices and a lobby. The second floor will have classrooms, a lounge, and four rooms. Floors three through six will each have a lounge and seven rooms per floor. The cellar will have a dining room, fitness room, and recreation space.

The property was acquired for $11.1 million on May 15, 2020.
