TCO given following $2M conversion of LES fire station to Henry Street social service center
Henry Street Settlement, on July 27, was issued a temporary certificate of occupancy for a $2 million project which converted a fire station to the Dale Jones Burch Neighborhood Center at 269 Henry Street in the Lower East Side. The building will be used for the Henry Street Parent Center and Resource Center.
The plans, pre-filed on May 12, 2016, call for a change in use of the 58-foot tall, three-story, building. The renovation also slightly decreased the building’s size, going from 6,045-square-feet to 5,900-square feet. The plans were permitted on February 14, 2018. The time from pre-file to TCO was four years and two months.
The project is described in the filings as: convert fire house to community facility. Renovate entire building, install new egress stair. The initial cost as reported in the DOB filing for the work described in this permit application is $2,000,000.
The cellar of the firehouse was converted to mechanical rooms, accessory storage space, and bathrooms, according to the plans filed. The ground floor was converted to a lobby and multipurpose room for the community center. The second and third floors were converted to the community center itself, while the third floor also has a multipurpose room. The fourth floor is now used for accessory offices.
The work was done by Beyer Blinder Belle Architects & Planners LLP.
