Gottlieb permitted for demo of two West Village buildings ahead of six-story resi development

William Gottlieb Real Estate, on March 8, was given a permit for the demolition of two buildings at 540-544 Hudson Street in West Village.

The demolitions have been in the works for years. In 2017, reports stated that the developer had submitted a landmarks proposal seeking to demolish the two former service station buildings and construct a six-story and penthouse development with residential and commercial space.

On February 6, 2018, Landmarks voted to approve the proposal. However, no new building plans have been filed yet.

The first plans, pre-filed on June 3, 2020, call for the demolition of a three-story building at 544 Hudson Street.

The project is described as: a full demolition of an existing three-story building using hand held means with mechanical assist at the lower floors and debris removal.

The developer purchased the building for an undisclosed amount in the early 1980s, per city records.
