Fifth Avenue Synagogue files plans for $11.9M revamp
Fifth Avenue Synagogue, on December 1, filed a permit application for a $11.9 million project at the 23,334-square-foot Synagogue at 5 East 62nd Street at the corner of Fifth Avenue in Lenox Hill. The project includes an enlargement of the third floor mezzanine, combining it with the fourth floor, as well as a redesign of the lobby, the social hall and the stair hall.
The plans call for a rehab of all floors of the 74-foot tall, five-story building.
The project is described in the filings as: renovation of an existing class 1 fireproof f1-b synagogue constructed under the 1938 NYC building code. Upgrading to the 1968 NYC building code. Changes to egress and occupancy as identified in the plans. enlargement of the existing third floor mezzanine, making it now the fourth floor. The initial cost as reported in the DOB filing for the work described in this permit application is $11,939,914.
The plans state the third floor mezzanine will be enlarged and combined with the fourth floor. Additionally, a kitchen will be added to the fifth floor, a kitchen and classroom space will be added to the sixth floor, and a play area will be added to the penthouse level.
Arthur Chabon Architect will be in charge of the rehab to the synagogue, which was designed in 1958 by Percival Goodman.
