City files plans to demolish 165k sf Brooklyn detention complex

The New York City Department of Design and Construction, on February 11, filed a permit application for the demolition of a 165,000-square-foot jail building at 275 Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn.

According to reports, the demolition of the building, which is part of the Brooklyn Detention Center, is part of the $8.3 billion city project to revamp the city’s aging jails. The city is also redeveloping the Queens Detention Center in Kew Gardens, Queens.

The Brooklyn building is expected to be replaced by a larger building that will have up to 1,437 beds, according to the Brooklyn Eagle.

According to an analysis of demolition plans filed with the NYC DOB, the plans call for the demolition of the second tallest building in the city in the previous 12 months.

The plans call for the demolition of an 11-story, 270-foot tall building.

The project is described in the filings as: full demolition of Brooklyn jail using partial mechanical means as per plans.
