U.S.Marshals Service sells seized Walker Tower penthouse for $18.3M
The U.S.Marshals Service sold for $18.3 million for a penthouse condo unit at 212 West 18th Street in Chelsea to an anonymous entity Gotham Tower LLC. The deal closed on August 19, 2020, and was recorded on August 28, 2020. The transaction consists of 1 parcel, including the tax class residential condo in Acris (SC). The property is 6,275 square feet.
The average sale price per square foot is $2,908.
The U.S. Department of Justice alleged the unit was purchased with money from 1MDB, the Malaysian state fund 1Malaysia Development Bhd, which the U.S. government accused of misappropriating $4.5 billion. The government seized the property.
The sale contract date was May 13, 2020. The last time the property sold was January 21, 2014, for $50,912,500.
In June, the Wall Street Journal reported the condo board of Walker Tower was seeking to buy the unit and re-list it, claiming the sale price was too low. The buying entity was formed June 23, 2020 and has an address at the law firm Schwartz Sladkus Reich Greenberg Atlas LLP.
